“It isn’t a fit night out there for man nor beast- Yukon Cornelius1
The words from “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer came to mind when my buddy asked me to go hunting one late December morning. We hadn’t been able to get out in the field as often as we had hoped, because work was keeping me too busy. I agreed to go out and we made plans to head out with our bows.
I picked him up just after daylight because we were hunting on another friend’s land. The weather was cold, but we were hopeful. We drove out through the country fields and as we drove the wind began to pick up, and soon the snow moved in.
We were dressed for a cold morning of hunting, but shortly after parking the SUV and walking into the brush the snow began to get heavier, soon the wind and snow were making visibility more difficult. The cold was digging its way through the heavy Carhart snow pants and the several layers I was wearing. I got up and He was already headed my way. We knew it was time to head home because there wouldn’t be any movement that morning. It took us about twenty minutes to get back to town, and by that time the roads were covered and a snowstorm had set in.
The adventure was another story for our memory, and even though we didn’t get anything it was fun doing it together. It was also a good test of our winter hunting gear, which kept us warm enough, and under normal conditions would have been just fine. It is the memories that make outdoor adventures like these enjoyable no matter the outcome.
